US: We will test nuclear weapons, but there will be no explosions

The United States has no plans to conduct nuclear explosions. This was stated by US Energy Secretary Chris Wright, dismissing speculation raised after President Donald Trump called on the military to resume nuclear weapons testing.

"These are not nuclear explosions, these are what we call non-critical explosions," Wright told the media.

The comment comes days after Trump posted on Truth Social that he had ordered defense officials to resume testing our nuclear weapons on a level playing field with our adversaries.

Trump's comments on Truth Social last week were interpreted by many as a sign that the U.S. was preparing to resume nuclear detonations that had been suspended in 1992.

"Russia is testing and China is testing, but they don't talk about it ," he said in an interview on Sunday. Russia completed its nuclear tests in 1990 and China in 1996.

North Korea is the only country to have conducted nuclear tests since the 1990s, but Pyongyang also announced a moratorium in 2018. /CNA
