Third consecutive night/ Belgian Defense Minister: Several drones have been seen

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken has announced that several drones have been seen flying over a Belgian military base near the Dutch border for the third consecutive night. The minister said that after the drones were spotted flying towards the Netherlands, a helicopter was deployed to the Kleine-Broge base. He also announced that an investigation has been launched into the incident.

Francken said in an interview that the presence of the drones looked like an espionage operation, but added that he did not know who could be behind it.

Drones were also seen flying over other military air bases, in Leopoldsburg, in the central province of Limburg, and Marche-en-Famenne in the southeast of the country.

This is the latest incident involving drones flying over European airspace in recent months. In October, unconfirmed drone sightings forced Munich Airport in Germany to close twice within 24 hours.

A month ago, Denmark said drones flew over its airports. Also in September, Estonia and Poland requested consultations with other NATO members after about 20 Russian drones flew over Poland and Russian MiG31 jets entered Estonian airspace.

Russia denied violating Estonian airspace and insisted that the Polish incursion was not intentional.

The European Commission has since proposed four defense projects, including an anti-drone system, as part of plans to prepare the continent to defend itself by 2030. /CNA
