Maldives becomes first country in the world to ban smoking for entire

The Maldives has become the first country in the world to implement a generational smoking ban, prohibiting those born after January 1, 2007, from using, purchasing or being sold tobacco products.

The measure was announced by President Mohamed Muizu and came into effect on November 1, with the aim of protecting public health and creating a "tobacco-free generation," according to the country's Ministry of Health.

Under the new law, anyone born on or after January 1, 2007, is not allowed to purchase, use or have access to tobacco products throughout the Maldives.

According to foreign media, the ban covers all forms of tobacco, with vendors being required to check the age of customers before making any sales. The measure also applies to visitors to the island nation, which consists of 1,191 small coral islands, stretches for about 800 kilometers along the equator and is famous for its luxury tourism.

At the same time, a complete ban on the import, sale, distribution, possession and use of e-cigarettes and vaping products for everyone, regardless of age, remains in effect.

Selling tobacco products to minors is punishable by a fine of 50,000 rufiyaa (about $3,200), while using smoking equipment carries a fine of 5,000 rufiyaa (about $320 )./CNA
