US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the United States and China have agreed to establish military channels to mitigate conflicts and de-escalate any problems.
The development comes after the historic meeting between the countries' leaders, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, a few days ago in South Korea.
Hegseth said the leaders agree that peace, stability and good relations are the best thing for both countries.
Hegseth said he and his Chinese counterpart, Minister of National Defense Dong Jun, made the decision after a phone call the night before.
"Admiral Dong and I also agreed that we should establish military channels to defuse conflicts and de-escalate any problems that arise," Hegseth said.
China continued to cut off tenuous ties with the US military in 2022, under the administration of then-US President Joe Biden, when then-Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, the self-governing island that Beijing claims as its province. /CNA
