Hurricane "Melissa" still in the Caribbean / The number of victims

The death toll from Hurricane Melissa has risen to 49 as the storm continues to sweep across the Caribbean, heading toward Bermuda. Workers in Jamaica have stepped up efforts to clear roads and reach people in isolated areas.

In Haiti, the death toll has risen to 30, with 20 others missing, the civil protection agency said Thursday. In Jamaica, the death toll has reached 19, but search and rescue efforts are continuing, Information Minister Dana Morris Dixon said.

Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, escaped without much serious damage and the main international airport has reopened to allow flights carrying vital aid to land. Officials said several towns were under water, while power lines and cell towers were down across much of the southwest.

Jamaica was one of the first countries to be hit this week. Melissa was the strongest hurricane to hit the country since records began in 1851. Hurricane Melissa was extremely destructive, estimated to have caused billions of dollars in damage, but accurate forecasts and government warnings meant that many people who managed to get to shelters were protected.

In eastern Cuba, authorities had evacuated about 735,000 people from their homes before the storm approached. Across the Bahamas, which Melissa has now passed, the government had airlifted nearly 1,500 people in one of its largest evacuation operations. /CNA
