Trump denies rumors of possible attacks on Venezuela

US President Donald Trump said on October 31 that he is not considering the possibility of carrying out attacks on Venezuela, a country that has expressed fears that the US military buildup in the region aims to change the regime in Caracas.

The United States has deployed eight Navy ships to the Caribbean, sent F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico and an aircraft carrier group is headed to the region - a massive military force that Washington insists is intended to curb drug trafficking.

"No," Trump replied when asked by a reporter aboard Air Force One about reports that he was considering such attacks.

Washington has been conducting a campaign of attacks targeting suspected drug-smuggling vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific since early September. The campaign has so far caused at least 62 deaths and destroyed 14 ships and a submarine.

The Trump administration argues that these ships pose a threat to US national security because it says they are trafficking drugs.

In addition to military equipment deployed in the region, Washington has carried out several demonstrations of force with B-52 and B-1B bombers flying near the Venezuelan coast. The latest incident occurred on Monday.

Regional tensions have escalated as a result of these attacks on ships suspected of transporting drugs and the military buildup, while Venezuela has said the US is plotting to overthrow Nicolas Maduro, who has accused Washington of "manufacturing a war."/REL
