Andrew loses his princely title

British monarch Charles III has begun the official process of removing the title of prince from his brother, Andrew, who will also leave his home in Windsor and move to Sandringham.

Buckingham Palace said Andrew has agreed to step down from royal duties as his links to financier Jeffrey Epstein, who was exposed as a paedophile, continue to cause controversy.

Andrew denies the allegations, but the Royal Palace has said there was a "serious lapse in judgment".

In a statement, the Palace said that "Prince Andrew will henceforth be known as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor."

"His lease on the royal property had until now provided him with legal protection to live there. The official notice to surrender the property has now been served and he will be moved to a private property. These measures are deemed necessary, despite the fact that he continues to deny the allegations against him," the statement said.

In January 2022, Andrew lost his military titles and patronages after he failed to persuade a US judge to dismiss a civil lawsuit against him, in which he was accused of sexual abuse.

Virginia Giuffre sued Andrew in 2021, claiming that when she was 17, he had sex with her several times at the request of Ghislaine Maxwell, the girlfriend of the now-deceased Epstein, who was accused of sex crimes.

This accusation has been denied by Andrew repeatedly, and in 2022 he and Giuffre reached an agreement, without facing trial.

However, his links to Epstein damaged his public reputation and forced Andrew to step back from some of his royal duties.
