Parliamentary elections in the Netherlands/ Wilders loses "the throne", who leads?

Rob Jetten's pro-European centrist D66 party and Geert Wilders' far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) are in a tight race for first place in the Dutch parliamentary elections. Both parties are reported to have secured 26 of the 150 seats in the Dutch parliament, with almost 95% of the votes counted.

The centre-right liberal VVD is expected to win 22 seats, Frans Timmermans' left-wing Green/Labour alliance 20 seats and the Christian Democratic Party (CDA) 18 seats.

Wilders' party is 11 seats short of its impressive victory in the 2023 election. Whatever the final result, Wilders will not become prime minister, as the other major parties have ruled out working with him.

After a row over immigration, Wilders pulled the PVV out of a fragile four-party coalition government, leading the country to snap elections. /CNA
