Barcelona's Sagrada Familia became the world's tallest church after part of its central tower was installed a day earlier. Architect Antoni Gaudi's masterpiece now stands 162.91 meters above the city, the church said in a statement, surpassing the spire of Germany's Ulmer Minster, which is 161.53 meters.

Although the iconic Sagrada Familia does not claim the title, it is now 1.38 meters taller than the cathedral in southern Germany, which has held the record for more than a century.

In the coming months, the central “Tower of Jesus Christ” is expected to be completed, reaching a dizzying height of 172 meters. The church’s foundation stone was laid in 1882, but Gaudí never expected it to be finished in his lifetime. When he died in 1926, only one of its towers had been completed.

In recent decades, work has accelerated as the church, located in Barcelona’s Eixample Right area, has become one of the most important attractions in Spain, with visitors from around the world captivated by Gaudí’s unique aesthetic, which combines Catholic symbolism and natural forms. Last year, it opened its doors to 4.9 million visitors, with ticket revenue financing the construction.

Work on the church’s ornate facades and interior decoration will continue for several years. It is expected to be completed in about a decade, church officials said earlier this year. In 2026, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Gaudí's death, activities will be held to honor the memory and legacy of the great Catalan architect. /CNA
