Terror in Crete/ Gun attack between two families, several victims and injured

Terror in Heraklion, Crete. Greek media have reported a shooting that left several dead and several injured. The number is not yet clear, there are several variants of the media reporting the event.

According to initial information, a group attacked by burning houses and cars, in retaliation for the explosion of a bomb in a residence, reports the Tanea news agency.

The Ministry of Citizen Protection has sounded the alarm, as this is the most serious attack in recent years in Crete. Police are conducting extensive investigations to identify the perpetrators, while heavy forces remain in the area.

The head of the Hellenic Police, Dimitris Mallios, the head of the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and special units of the Hellenic Police, including the EKAM of Crete, are on the island.

According to initial assessments, the attack is related to a long-standing enmity between the two families.

It all seems to have started after a bomb exploded in a house in Heraklion on Friday evening. The family members who owned the house are suspected of taking up arms and attacking relatives of the opposing side. The police have completely blocked the village, while an appeal is being made for the injured to be transferred to different hospitals, in order to avoid the two families meeting. Some of the injured have already been transported to PAGNI and Venizeli, under strict police measures.

The situation is described as critical and authorities fear an escalation of the attack within the next few hours./ CNA
