Mountain avalanche kills 5 German climbers in the Italian mountains

Five German climbers have died in an avalanche in the Ortler mountain region of southern Italy's Tyrol.

On Sunday, Italian rescue teams also found the bodies of the last two missing Germans, a father and his 17-year-old daughter. The bodies of three other members of the group were found on Saturday.

According to the Mountain Rescue Service, hopes of finding the two remaining climbers alive were dashed on Saturday evening. The operation was due to be called off after sunset on Saturday, with rescue teams planning their next search for Sunday.

The father and his daughter were on the safe list of victims after a fall of about 200 meters, said Olaf Reinstadler, a spokesman for the mountain rescue service. That assessment was confirmed on Sunday.
