6.3 magnitude earthquake strikes northern Afghanistan

A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 struck northern Afghanistan and was felt across Pakistan, India and other nearby countries, according to preliminary reports.

Its epicenter was in Afghanistan near the borders with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, according to seismologists at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the USGS, the epicenter was located about 23 kilometers south of Khulmi, Afghanistan, and 51 kilometers east-southeast of Mazar-e Shar?f, Afghanistan.

The earthquake was shallow, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

Reports on social media indicate that the earthquake was felt as far away as Kabul, Afghanistan, Mashhad, Iran, Islamabad, Pakistan and areas near the Pakistan-India border. /CNA
