Ukraine strengthens air defense / receives US-made Patriot systems

Ukraine has received more US-made Patriot air defense systems to help it cope with daily Russian air strikes, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, as Russian drones killed one person and wounded five others in a recent overnight attack.

"More Patriot systems are now in Ukraine and are being put into operation. Of course, more systems are needed to protect key infrastructure sites and our cities throughout the territory of our state," Zelenskyy said in a post on social media.

He thanked Germany and its Chancellor Friedrich Merz for the Patriot systems, which are the most effective weapon against Russian missiles. Zelensky has urged Western partners to provide more of them, but production constraints and the need to maintain stockpiles have slowed their deployment. 

NATO is coordinating regular shipments of large arms packages to Ukraine, with European allies and Canada purchasing most of the equipment from the US, which has the largest stockpiles of military materiel available, as well as the most effective weapons.

Meanwhile, the administration of US President Donald Trump is not providing weapons to Ukraine as readily as Trump's predecessor, Joe Biden, did. /CNA
