Drone attack on funeral in Sudan kills dozens

At least 40 people in Sudan have been killed in a drone attack targeting a funeral taking place outside the army-controlled town of el-Obeid in North Kordofan state.

The state government said in a statement that dozens of civilians were killed and injured in the attack, which targeted a funeral tent in the village. It described the attack as “a new crime added to the repeated atrocities of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group against civilians,” saying that several women, children and the elderly were among the victims, without giving an exact figure.

The state government called on the international community to immediately classify RSF as a terrorist organization, accusing it of committing ethnically and racially motivated crimes against unarmed civilians.

The attack came shortly after RSF said it would soon launch an offensive on El-Obeid, calling on residents to leave the town through what it called safe corridors. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 38,000 people have fled North and South Kordofan due to worsening insecurity in the area since late October.

The RSF recently took control of the town of Bara in North Kordofan as part of its ongoing war with the Sudanese army, although it denies targeting civilians. On October 26, the RSF overran the town of El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, and carried out massacres against civilians, according to local and international organizations, amid warnings that the attack could deepen Sudan's geographical division.

Since April 15, 2023, the Sudanese army and the RSF have been engaged in a war that regional and international mediation has failed to end. The conflict has killed thousands of people and displaced millions more. /CNA
