Typhoon "Kalmagi" hits the Philippines / 40 people die, thousands evacuated

The death toll from Typhoon Kalmagi in the Philippines has risen to 40. The powerful storm brought torrential rains, flooding homes in the central regions of the country and forcing thousands of residents to evacuate.

A military helicopter crashed in strong winds, killing six crew members, while on a disaster relief mission in the central part of the country. Nearly 400,000 people have been displaced by the powerful typhoon that caused widespread flooding in several areas of the country. 

Entire towns on the island of Cebu have been flooded, with residents trying to take shelter on rooftops to escape the muddy waters that are sweeping away cars, trucks and large shipping containers. Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations to find any survivors.

Kalmagi has caused widespread flooding and evacuations in the Visayas region, while Vietnam braces for the typhoon's arrival after deadly flooding in recent days. /CNA
