Vu?i?: Serbia is committed to reforms despite the gap in EU foreign policy

Often accused of being the black sheep among EU candidate countries, Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? defended his country's willingness to carry out reforms during the Eurozone Enlargement Summit on Tuesday.

“We must take into account all the remarks, all the demands from the European Union,” Vu?i? said, adding: “Serbia is very committed to its path towards the EU and will pursue it in a very serious and responsible manner.”

Serbia (population 6.6 million) has been at the EU's gates since 2009, the year it submitted its membership application, but accession negotiations have been difficult since then.

In addition to media freedom, electoral reform, and the space allowed for civil society, Belgrade's foreign policy is causing difficulties for Europeans.

Doubts about the outcome of sanctions against Russia

The Serbian leader's presence at the Russian military parade on May 9 raised concerns among Europeans, while his relations with China are seen by the Commission as "a strategic concern".

"I will not justify myself by talking to someone," Vu?i? told Euronews. "I believe that everyone should talk to each other."

In its annual enlargement report, the Commission highlights Belgrade's lack of support for EU sanctions against Moscow.

Vu?i? argued that sanctions are ineffective and harmful to ordinary people.

"We were under sanctions for many years. We actually harmed ordinary people," the Serbian leader said. "I have some doubts about the outcome of the large packages of sanctions that were imposed against Russia in the last three and a half or four years."

Vucic sidestepped a question about the protests that have gripped the country for a year to highlight the country's strong economic performance, with public debt falling from 79% of GDP in 2014, when he took charge of Serbia, to 43% today./ CNA
