Antonio Costa: Montenegro could be the 28th country to join the EU in 2028

The President of the European Council, during his keynote speech at the EU Enlargement Summit, stated that Montenegro could be the 28th country to join the European Union in 2028.

"I believe that Montenegro could be the 28th in 2028. Montenegro has made the most progress and their ambition to close the negotiations by the end of 2026 seems credible, if they continue with the same commitment and intensive work on the required reforms," ??Costa said.

Montenegro received candidate country status in 2010 and opened negotiations with the EU in 2012. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Milojko Spajic himself has repeatedly expressed confidence that his country, which has a population of just over 620,000, will become the 28th member of the EU by 2028. He has said that Montenegro is already functioning as if it were part of the EU. /CNA
