The best EU candidate country on paper

Summarizing the European Commission's report today, Montenegro is among the best countries on paper to join the European Union and become its 28th member state. 

The Commission believes that Montenegro is "on track" to meet its ambitious target of closing EU accession negotiations by the end of 2026.

"The timely filling of senior judicial and prosecutorial positions remains a challenge that must be addressed," the Commission said.

Filip Ivanovic, Montenegro's Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, told the Euronews summit that his country is where it is now thanks to "hard work and political commitment".

"The report we just received is additional proof of the plan we had as a government. We want each report to be better than the others. This is the best report ever," he said.

He added that EU membership without full voting rights is "hardly acceptable."

In addition, the Montenegrin vice president praised the EU's enlargement policy, calling it the bloc's "most important policy." He said that the membership of more countries in the bloc would strengthen its geopolitical position.

Montenegro's membership would also carry symbolic weight and show that EU accession is an achievable goal for neighboring countries, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, and Serbia./ CNA
