A US appeals court has given Florida the green light to implement a law that bars Chinese citizens from buying real estate and land, rejecting claims that the law violates federal law and promotes discrimination against Asians. 

The ruling by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta could encourage other states to pass similar laws, which were once common but were repealed nearly a century ago. Local legislatures in more than 30 states are considering or have passed laws restricting foreign ownership rights.

The law prohibits people residing in China who are not U.S. citizens or green card holders from buying real estate or land in Florida. Non-tourist visa holders and asylum seekers are only allowed to buy one home, as long as it is at least 5 miles from any military installation. /CNA
