Trump: No food aid until Democrats end government shutdown

US President Donald Trump has declared that food assistance for millions of poor Americans, through the Department of Agriculture's SNAP program, will not be provided unless Democrats end the federal government shutdown.

"Benefits will only be provided when the Radical Left Democrats open the government, which they can easily do, and not before that," he wrote in a post on the Truth Social platform, referring to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

The government says it does not have the funds to cover the program because of the 35-day government shutdown that has blocked Democrats and Republicans in their attempt to reach a budget deal.

A federal judge in Rhode Island on Saturday ordered the Trump administration to pay benefits in full by Monday or make partial payments by Wednesday, saying beneficiaries would be irreparably harmed if they did not receive them on time.

The government responded in a lawsuit on Monday that it would allocate $450 million in tax revenue to another program, food assistance for young children, but would not provide the $4 billion needed to fund SNAP. /CNA
