US government shutdown breaks record: 36 days without a deal

The extended government shutdown in the United States is set to become the longest in the country's history, as it entered 36 days without a federal funding deal on Wednesday, surpassing the previous record set in 2019 (from December 22, 2018 to January 25, 2019).

The latest attempt to break the impasse through a Republican-backed temporary funding bill failed in the Senate for the 14th time on Tuesday, extending the political deadlock in Washington.

Meanwhile, no further votes are scheduled on either the Republican temporary funding bill or the Democratic alternative, which includes increased spending on health care and other social sectors.

This means that the paralysis of the government mechanism will reach a new limit. This development also means that President Donald Trump holds the record for the two longest federal government shutdowns in US history during his terms, one in each term. This development

reflects the deep political division that the country is experiencing, as well as Congress during his time, given the extreme policies that he is implementing.

In this case, Democrats and Republicans are unable to compromise, focusing mainly on the subsidies of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Democrats are calling for the extension of subsidies that expire at the end of the year for millions of Americans, in order to maintain access to insurance coverage. Republicans, led by Donald Trump, have stated that they will not negotiate the rescue of these subsidies before the government reopens.

At the same time, the political scene includes strong ideological conflicts: on the one hand, Democrats support the expansion of state support for healthcare, on the other hand, Republicans oppose new spending without the simultaneous approval of general budgets.

As for the economic impacts, they are already visible and extensive. According to the Congressional Budget Office, a prolonged shutdown could lead to losses of 7 to 14 billion dollars in US GDP. In addition, about 750,000 federal employees are on leave or working without pay, which negatively affects consumption and local economies. The consequences also extend to the private sector: delays in government contracts, postponement of investments, problems in aid programs and in the real estate market. /CNA
