UN: Tensions in the Middle East are driving up global food prices

The UN reported a second monthly rise in global food prices as conflict in the Middle East raises energy and fertilizer costs, threatening future harvests and yields despite currently stable market supplies.

Rising energy costs, driven by tensions in the Middle East, have pushed global food prices higher for the second consecutive month, according to data from the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization.

The latest FAO index, which tracks monthly changes in international prices of a basket of globally traded food commodities, rose 1% above its level a year ago, highlighting how geopolitical tensions are pushing up production and transportation costs, adding fresh pressure on global food markets.

"The main issue we have now is actually the impact of the conflict on energy and on fertilizers. So, actually, the cost of producing future crops, not the food we have today, but the food we need tomorrow and the day after," said David Georges Robert Laborde, FAO's director of agri-food economics.

Laborde warned that if the conflict in the Middle East continues, farmers will also be affected.
