Pope Leo XIV has become the first Pope in decades to carry the Cross throughout the Good Friday procession at the Colosseum in Rome.

This symbolic act had not been seen since the time of Pope John Paul II (before 1995), demonstrating not only the physical strength of the 70-year-old Holy Father, but also a clear spiritual message to the troubled world.

Accompanied by some 30,000 faithful and countless followers around the world on social media, television and radio, the Pope led the Way of the Cross through the candlelit ruins of the ancient Roman building, which witnessed the martyrdom of many early Christians.

Every year, the Pope and the faithful of Rome gather at the Colosseum to make a spiritual pilgrimage through the fourteen Stations of the Cross that commemorate the death and burial of Jesus.

As Pope Leo carried the Cross, passages from the Gospel were read, along with short excerpts from the writings of St. Francis and meditations written by Franciscan Father Francesco Patton, former Custos of the Holy Land.

In his meditations, Father Patton presents the example of Saint Francis as to how Christians can embody the theological virtues of faith, hope, and charity in the real world.

At the conclusion of the Stations of the Cross, Pope Leo XIV prayed that Christians would respond to Saint Francis' invitation to live our lives as a journey of ever-deeper participation in the community of love. /CNA
