Extreme heat drives away tourists, they "turn their eyes" from cold

Worsening weather conditions across southern Europe could affect the number of holidaymakers in the region, as rising temperatures and storms threaten popular tourist destinations. 

Currently, some of the hottest temperatures have been recorded in European countries, causing fires in tourist destinations such as Italy, Greece, France and Portugal ,   reports SchengenVisaInfo.com.

In addition, many parts of Greece, Italy and Spain recorded a maximum temperature of more than 45 degrees Celsius. 

These temperatures are driving tourists away to colder destinations. Data from the European Travel Commission shows that the number of travelers planning to travel between June and November fell by four percent.

Less crowded countries with cooler climates are gaining traction this year, with destinations such as Bulgaria, Ireland, the Czech Republic and Denmark becoming more popular.

Fires in European countries

Extreme weather conditions in Italy have claimed seven lives, three in the southern region due to fires and four in northern cities due to strong storms, while some tourists were unable to travel after Palermo airport was closed, threatened by fires in nearby areas.

The situation is more serious in the Mediterranean area of ??Algeria and Tunisia, where an extreme European heat wave has caused the death of 34 people and serious damage.

Overall, the hot temperatures are affecting the popularity of Mediterranean holiday destinations, which fell by ten percent last year when Europe experienced its hottest summer ever.

The fires in Greece have caused two more victims, while hundreds of residents, including tourists, were forced to evacuate. Croatia's Adriatic pearl Dubrovnik has also been threatened by wildfires, as the blaze engulfed an area 12 kilometers from the popular destination.
