The four-day ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war begins

A temporary ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas took effect on Friday, paving the way for the exchange of dozens of hostages held by the radical group's fighters in Gaza for Palestinians imprisoned in Israel, the Associated Press reports.

The ceasefire began at 7 a.m. local time (6 a.m. European time), and is expected to last at least four days.

During the ceasefire, Hamas - designated a terrorist organization by the United States of America and the European Union - has pledged to release at least 50 of the approximately 240 hostages it took during the deadly 7 terror attack in Israel.

On the other hand, Israel is expected to release three Palestinian prisoners for every hostage released by the Palestinian extremist group.

The releases are expected to happen in phases over the next four days.

The agreement on a ceasefire and the release of hostages and prisoners was reached after weeks of tense indirect negotiations, with Qatar, the US and Egypt serving as mediators.

If it stands, the ceasefire will mark the first serious cessation of hostilities since Israel declared war on Hamas seven weeks ago.

About 1,200 people were killed by Hamas attackers in Israel on October 7, according to Israeli authorities.

Israel has responded with massive airstrikes and a ground offensive, destroying large parts of Gaza and killing at least 14,000 Palestinians, according to health authorities in the Hamas-ruled territory.
