Pope Francis: Israel-Hamas conflict has turned into "terrorism"

Pope Francis said on Wednesday that the conflict between Israel and Hamas - the radical Palestinian group declared a terrorist organization by the US and the EU - has gone beyond war and has become "terrorism".

He made these comments after parting meetings with the families of Israeli hostages being held by Hamas and with Palestinians who have family in the Gaza Strip.

Speaking to his general audience in St. Peter's Square after meetings at his residence on Wednesday morning, Francis said he heard firsthand how "both sides are suffering" in the conflict.

"This is what wars cause. But here we have surpassed wars. This is not war. This is terrorism", said Fran?esku.

He called for prayers so that both sides would not "continue with the passions, which, in the end, kill everyone."

Francis' meetings and statements come hours after the Israeli government and Hamas agreed to a four-day ceasefire to allow the release of 50 hostages being held in Gaza in exchange for the release of 150 Palestinians imprisoned in Israel and the entry of humanitarian aid in the besieged territory.

Israel has besieged Gaza and bombed it relentlessly since Hamas launched attacks on southern Israeli cities that killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, according to Israeli officials.

Since then, more than 13,000 Palestinians, about 40 percent children, have been killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health./ REL
