Former Forza Italia MP Giancarlo Pittelli was sentenced to 11 years in prison by a court in Lamezia Terme on Monday and was among over 200 people sentenced in the so-called Rinascita Scott 'maxi', otherwise known as the trial against the members of the Ndrangheta.

ANSA reports that prosecutors had sought a 17-year prison sentence for Pittelli, 70, who is also a lawyer and accused of being a crime syndicate fixer.

He was convicted of outside involvement in mafia associations and two counts of disclosing confidential information.

The court took one hour and 40 minutes to deliver its verdict in a specially set up courtroom in Lamezia Terme after two years and 10 months of hearings.

Carabinieri police lieutenant Giorgio Naselli was sentenced to two years and six months in prison, well short of the required eight years, for leaking official confidential information.

The court sentenced Saverio Razionale and Domenico Bonavota, bosses of the San Gregorio and Sant'Onofrio clans, to 30 years in prison.

The former mayor of the town of Pizzo, Gianluca Callipo, was acquitted after prosecutors had sought an 18-year prison sentence for him.

The 'Ndrangheta is widely regarded as the most powerful organized crime syndicate in Italy, and thanks to its control over most of the cocaine that arrives in Europe, its reach has extended beyond its base in the southern region of Calabria./ CNA
