Europol has announced that it has hit a network of sexual abuse of children.

This was made possible thanks to a large operation between several countries, against the sexual exploitation of children in the Balkan region.

From the operation, 39 suspected child abusers were identified and 2 of the victims were taken into custody. 

Operation codenamed "MOZAIK 2023" was led by the Slovenian National Police and coordinated by Europol in the framework of the European Multidisciplinary Platform against Criminal Threats (EMPACT). 

The aim of the operation was to identify and arrest people who were using online networks and messaging apps to share and distribute child sexual abuse material. 

Western Balkan countries such as Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary conducted a series of investigations from November 6 to 17. Following investigations, 3 suspects were arrested for crimes related to the distribution of child abuse images.

More than 200 items containing images or videos of child sexual abuse were also seized during the raids, including computers, mobile phones, computer servers and memory cards.

Europol facilitated the exchange of information between all countries involved.

In the framework of EMPACT, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Europol's European Cybercrime Center have joined to create a network of experts in the Western Balkans with the aim of strengthening cross-border cooperation in the fight against child sexual abuse. / CNA
