US President, Joe Biden

The American President, Joe Biden, speaking about the time after the war in the Middle East, has once again defended the idea of ??a two-state solution. In an op-ed in the Washington Post, Biden advocated a "single government" of the West Bank and Gaza under a renewed Palestinian Authority. He also mentioned the introduction of sanctions against extremist settlers in the West Bank.

"The goal should be the end of violence"

"A two-state solution is the only way to ensure the long-term security of the Israeli and Palestinian people," Biden's article reads. "While it may seem now that the future has never been further away, the crisis has made it even more urgent".

The American president stressed that the Palestinian people deserve their own state and a future free from the Islamic Hamas. "The images from Gaza and the deaths of thousands of civilians, including children, break my heart. Now the goal must be to end the war forever and break the cycle of violence."

Biden: There should be no invasion or encirclement

The US president reiterated: "There must be no violent expulsion of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, no reoccupation, no siege or blockade and no reduction of the territory." Biden again criticized the "extreme violence against Palestinians in the West Bank." He noted that he has insisted to Israeli leaders that those who perpetrate this violence and that they must be held accountable. "The United States is prepared to take its own measures, including imposing entry bans on extremists who attack civilians in the West Bank," he warned Biden. He specifically did not use the word column.

Skepticism in Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reacted to Biden's request with skepticism. He says the Palestinian Authority in its current form is not capable of taking the lead in Gaza. Netanyahu plans for Israel to have military responsibility in the Gaza Strip for the foreseeable future.

Israel has agreed to import limited amounts of fuel into the Gaza Strip to secure international support for the fight against Hamas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. "Humanitarian aid is necessary for continued international support," Netanyahu said in Tel Aviv. For this reason, at the request of the USA, the import of two tankers per day in the coastal area is allowed.

Abbas asks Biden for support

In a televised address, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas urged Biden to put pressure on Israel. He spoke verbatim of the "genocide" in Gaza and said: "How can this genocide be justified as self-defense? In reality, these are war crimes that must be punished." Abbas called on the US president to intervene "to stop attacks by Israeli forces on the West Bank and Jerusalem". Abbas also asked Biden to commit to an increase in humanitarian aid entering the blockaded coastal zone.

WHO complains about the "situation"

The World Health Organization (WHO) is working hard on a plan to save the remaining patients from the Al-Shifa hospital in the Gaza Strip, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on the "X" portal. Employees visited the hospital on Saturday and informed him of a very serious situation. There is no water, electricity or food there and almost no medical supplies left.

"Given this dire situation and the condition of many patients, including infants, staff asked for assistance in evacuating critically ill patients who cannot be treated there," Ghebreyesus wrote. WHO is working with partners and seeking support for this plan. Tedros did not mention Israel, whose army has been controlling the hospital for days, or Hamas by name. "The current situation is intolerable and unjustifiable," he wrote. "Stop the fire. NOW," added WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus./ DW
