Scholz calls on Putin to withdraw troops from Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to take the first step towards a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

"He has to pull back the troops," Scholz said during a visit to Germany's Nuthetal on Nov. 18.

However, when asked whether peace negotiations were possible, the German chancellor said there was currently no signal that Putin intended to withdraw troops.

Putin should not succeed in his goal of using troops to annex parts of neighboring Ukraine, Scholz said.

The German chancellor reiterated that Germany will continue to help Ukraine defend itself against Russian invasion as long as necessary.

These statements made by Scholz come on the day that the Ukrainian military announced massive Russian drone strikes in southern and northern Ukraine that targeted energy infrastructure.

Russia - which launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 - last winter targeted energy infrastructure, leaving millions of Ukrainians without electricity and heat for long periods of time./ Rel
