Israel: The release of hostages in Gaza will not begin before Friday
Tzachi Hanegbi

The release of hostages under a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants will not happen before Friday, Israel's national security adviser said on Wednesday.

Israel and Hamas agreed early Wednesday to a ceasefire in Gaza for at least four days, to allow aid to flow in and to release at least 50 hostages held by militants in the Palestinian enclave in exchange for at least 150 Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.

The start of the ceasefire and the release of the hostages taken by Hamas during the bloody October 7 attack on Israel has not yet been officially announced. An Egyptian source said the mediators had requested 10 a.m. Thursday for the start of the process.

Israeli public broadcaster Kan quoted an Israeli official as saying there was a 24-hour delay in the deal because it had not been signed by Hamas and the intermediary country, Qatar. The official said they are optimistic that the agreement will be implemented once it is signed.

"The start of the release of the hostages will proceed based on the original agreement between the parties and not before Friday," Israel's National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said in a statement released by the prime minister's office.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not mention the possibility of a delay in the implementation of the agreement during a press conference late Wednesday. Mr. Hanegbi's statement was released about an hour after the press conference.

Israel says the ceasefire could be extended further if more hostages are released. A Palestinian source said that around 100 hostages could be released by the end of the month./ VOA
