The population census in Kosovo is postponed until spring

The Government of Kosovo has again postponed for several months the process of population census, which is now expected to start in April next year.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said in a Government meeting, held on Wednesday, November 22, that the registration process "has not been well managed" by the Statistics Agency of Kosovo.

The head of the Kosovar executive has also mentioned the new leadership of KAS as a factor that prompted him to propose the further postponement of the population census process.

According to the new government decision, the process will take place from April 5 to May 17, 2024.

On August 23, the Government had decided to postpone the population census process for two months, and had planned for it to start on November 1.

Justifying that decision during a Government meeting, Prime Minister Kurti had said that a series of delays in the process had made it impossible to start the population census on September 1.

He had said that the process was postponed due to resistance from the Central Commission of Registration from the Association of Municipalities of Kosovo.

The last population census in Kosovo was done in 2011, while the census that was supposed to be done in 2021, has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the 2011 census, the total number of inhabitants in Kosovo is estimated to be around 1.8 million.

However, this census did not include residents of municipalities with a Serbian majority in the north of Kosovo - Leposavic, Zubin Potok, Zveçan and North Mitrovica - since at that time they had rejected the process./ REL
