A car has exploded at a border crossing on the American side of the US-Canada bridge in Niagara Falls, forcing authorities to close the crossing to traffic.

Two people were found dead inside the car that exploded, an official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

"It's clear that it's a serious situation in Niagara Falls," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said while in Parliament. He then told lawmakers he had to leave Parliament to get more information about the incident.

The explosion occurred on the Rainbow Bridge, on the US side. This bridge connects both states and passes through Niagara Falls. Three other bridges connecting the US and Canada were closed after the incident as a precautionary measure.

Authorities in Canada began checking all cars, and Trudeau said "additional measures" were being taken at the country's border points.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced that it is investigating the explosion, while police teams for explosive devices went to the scene.

According to photos published on social media, heavy smoke can be seen coming out near the border crossing and the car that exploded is very close to the border.

The US Attorney General, Merrick Garland, and the governor of New York have been informed of this event.

Meanwhile, the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission announced that it has closed three border crossings.
