Anti-Islam populist to victory in the Netherlands

Far-right, anti-Islamic populist Geert Wilders is heading for a landslide victory in the Dutch parliamentary elections.

The result puts him in line to lead talks on forming a new governing coalition and possibly become the first right-wing prime minister at a time of political turmoil across much of the continent.

An exit poll published by national broadcaster NOS said Wilders' Freedom Party won 35 of the 150 seats in parliament, more than double the number of seats won in the last election. Official final results are expected only on Thursday.

Wilders' election program includes calls for a referendum on the Netherlands' departure from the European Union, a total ban on accepting asylum seekers and the return of migrants to Dutch borders.

He also advocates the "de-Islamization" of the Netherlands, although he has been softer on Islam during this election campaign than in the past.

"Voters said, 'We're tired of this.' Sick to our stomachs," Wilders said, adding that he was now on a mission to end the "asylum tsunami," referring to the migration issue that dominated his campaign.

"The Dutch will be number one again," said Wilders. "People must return their nation," he added.

But the lawmaker, who has in the past been labeled a Dutch version of Donald Trump, will have to form a coalition government before taking power.

This will be difficult as the main parties are reluctant to join forces with him and his party./ REL
