EU sends border guards to Finland

The European Union's border protection agency, Frontex, said on November 23 that it will deploy 50 officers to Finland, which has seen a surge in migrants on its eastern border with Russia.

In addition to border guards and other staff, Frontex also said it will send equipment such as patrol cars "to increase the control of activities at the Finnish border".

Reinforcements are expected to be sent to Filalanda "next week", the announcement said.

On Wednesday, Finland said it would close all but the northernmost border crossings with Russia after recording a surge in illegal migrants.

Helsinki said Moscow was to blame, with Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo accusing Russian authorities of "systematically and organized" facilitation of illegal border crossings.

The head of Frontex, Hans Leijtens, did not mention Russia by name, but said in a statement that the agency is strengthening support for Finland, which is facing "hybrid challenges".

"This cooperation shows that when we face complex challenges at the border, Europe stands together and offers help," he said.

Ftontex currently has 10 officers working at Finland's borders.

Finland has a border of 1,300 kilometers with Russia. Helsinki's relations with Moscow have deteriorated since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine last year, which prompted Finland to join the NATO alliance in April./ REL
