Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on the head of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, on Sunday to remove the peacekeepers engaged in southern Lebanon, saying that Hezbollah is using them as "human shields".

Hezbollah, the militant group and political party that controls much of southern Lebanon, has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted only the armed wing, but not the party, which has seats in Parliament of Lebanon.

Netanyahu's call to Guterres came a day after the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reiterated its refusal to leave the border area, even after five of its members were injured, as a result of the Israel- Hezbollah.

"General Secretary, move the forces away from the harmful path. We must act now, immediately," Netanyahu said through a video message released by his office.

He has said that the Israeli forces have asked the peacekeepers several times to leave, and that their presence is serving "the Hezbollah terrorists as human shields".

"Your refusal to evacuate the soldiers makes them hostages of Hezbollah. This endangers them and the lives of our soldiers," Netanyahu said.

But the peacekeepers are continuing to stand in their positions.

"It is our decision to stay, because it is important for the UN flag to remain high in the sky in this region, to be able to report to the Security Council", said the spokesperson of the UN force in Lebanon, Andrea Tenenti. , in several responses to AFP news agency.

He said that Israel has requested that the peacekeepers leave 29 positions in southern Lebanon.

Days ago, the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, said that Washington is still working to prevent a major war in the Middle East, and called on Israel to protect civilians in Lebanon.

The Middle East continues to be alarmed by the possible escalation of the war as Israel fights Iran-backed groups Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas - a Palestinian group designated as a terrorist by the United States and the European Union - in Gaza./REL
