Kremlin: Putin is open to dialogue with Scholz

Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to dialogue with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Russian media on Sunday.

"We have repeatedly stated that we are open to contact", Peskov said, but that, according to him, there was no proposal from the German side for a telephone conversation.

Peskov made this statement after the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, said on Friday that Putin is no longer even willing to speak with the chancellor over the phone.

Scholz has recently spoken of exploring options for peace, and there have been reports of a planned phone conversation between the chancellor and Putin.

In early October, Peskov said that Putin is open to dialogue, although, according to him, relations between Moscow and Berlin are at their lowest point, and that is not Russia's fault.

Scholz last spoke to Putin on the phone in December 2022.

The German chancellor then requested a diplomatic solution and the withdrawal of Russian military troops from Ukraine.

In June, Scholz said that he does not rule out a conversation with Putin in the future, but only if there is a specific topic to discuss.

Western leaders cut off contact with the Russian president after Russia launched its war in Ukraine in February 2022.

Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
