British Defense Minister Says Threat Risk in Straits Is Complex

The BBC reports that British defense sources say the United Kingdom is in discussions with the US military and other allies about the possibility of opening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important sea lanes.

According to reports, a number of British military specialists have been sent to United States Central Command in Florida to assist with planning, in addition to British personnel already stationed there.

British Defense Minister Al Carnes said London was holding talks with allies on a joint response, stressing that the situation required a multinational commitment. He added that discussions were still in the "very early stages."

Carns stressed that the threats in the Strait of Hormuz are complex and challenging, warning that any potential escort mission would be more difficult than previous operations.

He recalled that during the Iran-Iraq War, in 1987, a similar operation involved more than 30 warships, underscoring the large scale of such an intervention.

Meanwhile, some Royal Navy assets have been placed on higher alert, but according to the minister, there are currently not many countries willing to send warships to the area, due to the high level of threat.
