Former Kremlin loyalist turns against Putin: He should resign

For years, Ilya Remeslo was known as one of the staunchest voices of the pro-Kremlin line, attacking critics of the regime and independent journalists. But in a surprising development, the 42-year-old lawyer has changed his stance, openly turning against the Russian president.

On Tuesday evening, Remeslo published a manifesto on the Telegram platform to his approximately 90,000 followers, titled “Five reasons why I stopped supporting Vladimir Putin.” In it, he accuses the Russian leader of waging a “failed war” in Ukraine, noting that the conflict has caused huge losses and severely damaged the country’s economy.

In his statements, Remeslo calls Putin an "illegal president" and argues that more than two decades in power have shown that "absolute power corrupts." He calls on the Kremlin leader to resign and face justice.

His reaction has caused a stir in the Russian online space, raising questions about the reasons for this sudden change and whether his stance is sincere.

In an interview with The Guardian, Remeslo declared that the system built by Putin is “corrupt and destined to collapse,” citing the situation in Ukraine as an example. According to him, the Russian military is not making progress and the war is not bringing concrete results for Russia.

He also sharply criticized the authoritarian government, the economic situation and efforts to restrict the internet, saying the country is "literally being destroyed."

According to analyst Ivan Philippov, Remeslo's reaction is a rare case, as very few figures from the pro-war camp have dared to directly challenge Putin. "This is unprecedented," he said, adding that the situation remains unclear.
