Germany's official statistics office, Destatis, has revealed that in 2022, about 20.2 million people with a history of immigration lived in the country, which represents an increase compared to the previous year.

According to Destatis, the number of people who had an immigration history in 2022 was 1.2 million or 6.5 percent more than in 2021.

"In 2022, 20.2 million people with an immigration history lived in Germany. Based on the results of the micro-registration, the Federal Statistics Agency reports that this was an increase of 1.2 million, or 6.5 percent, compared to the previous year (2021: 19.0 million),” the statement said.

In addition to the above, Destatis also shared more specific data on the total population and their immigration history.

Data provided by Destatis shows that in 2022, a total of 83.1 million people lived in Germany. Of the total, 71 percent of the total population in 2021 had no immigration history, 18 percent of them were immigrants, six percent were descendants, and five percent had a parent with an immigration history.

Another 4.7 million people living in the country in 2021 were descendants of immigrants, meaning they were born in Germany but both parents had immigrated to the country since 1950.

In terms of the number of immigrants, Germany ranked seventh on the list in 2021, behind Malta, Cyprus, Sweden, Luxembourg, Austria and Ireland, all of which had a higher proportion of immigrants.
