Israel: Nasrallah's successor in power may have been "eliminated"

Israel claims that Hashem Safieddine, the ruling successor to slain Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, has been "eliminated".

Meanwhile, the American vice president, Kamala Harris, candidate of the Democrats in the presidential elections in November, has said that Tehran is the greatest enemy of the United States.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said on October 8 that Hezbollah, a militant group supported by Iran and the political party that controls most of southern Lebanon, is a "headless organization".

"Nasrallah has been eliminated — his replacement is most likely eliminated," Gallant told officials of the military's northern command, without elaborating.

"There is no one to make decisions, there is no one to act."

Hezbollah is declared a terrorist organization by the United States, while the European Union has blacklisted the armed wing, but not the political party.

The Hezbollah political party has seats in Lebanon's Parliament.

Hashem Safieddine, a senior Hezbollah official and Nasrallah's cousin, was expected to ascend to head the group, but his whereabouts have not been known since Israel targeted a meeting of Hezbollah's leadership on October 2.

Hezbollah has not commented on Safieddin's fate, although unidentified members have told media that the group has lost contact with him since the attack.

Safieddine has been declared a global terrorist by the United States.

Meanwhile, Harris has said on the CBS network program, 60 Minutes, that she considers Iran to be the greatest enemy of the United States.

"Iran has American blood on its hands," she said.

"What we've seen in terms of the attack on Israel, 200 ballistic missiles, what we need to do is make sure that Iran never has the ability to become a nuclear power - that's among my top priorities."

Harris did not speculate on whether the US would take military action if it is proven that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

Tehran has denied that it is creating such weapons, and claims that it has a nuclear program only for civilian purposes./REL
