Iran closes the Strait of Hormuz again/Response to the American blockade

The situation in the Middle East took a dramatic turn this Saturday, after Iranian state media announced that the military has decided to close the Strait of Hormuz again.

This extreme decision comes as a direct reaction to Washington's determination to maintain the naval blockade on all Iranian ports.

Although just hours earlier the Foreign Ministry in Tehran had hinted that the waterway would be open to commercial ships, the new military order has immediately blocked the passage of tankers, openly challenging President Donald Trump's declarations that the strait was "ready for business."

The blockage of this key point, through which about a fifth of the world's oil passes, has created total confusion in international markets and has put maritime monitoring agencies on alert.

While Trump claims that Iran has agreed to hand over enriched uranium and that talks were going "great," this latest move by Tehran shows a very different reality on the ground.

Iran appears to be using the closure of Hormuz as a last-ditch pressure tool to force the US to lift the economic blockade that is costing the country hundreds of millions of dollars a day.

According to international correspondents, this escalation comes at a critical moment, when the two-week ceasefire is nearing expiration.

Despite several tankers being seen crossing in the early hours of the day, the latest military order is expected to halt any further movement, pushing tensions between the two countries to their highest point in years.

While the White House insists it will not withdraw without a comprehensive peace agreement, the world is watching with concern whether this new standoff will lead to an open military clash in the waters of the Gulf./ CNA
