US-Iran tensions / Strait of Hormuz opens, but Trump continues blockade

The Strait of Hormuz, a key point for global oil trade, is experiencing hours of diplomatic uncertainty and strong market fluctuations, while recent statements from Tehran and Washington signal a mix of hope for peace and threats of escalation.

The speaker of Iran's parliament warned that the Strait of Hormuz "will not remain open" if the US continues its naval blockade of Iranian ports.

This threat comes despite the fact that the Iranian Foreign Minister earlier stated that the passage is "fully open" to commercial ships during the remaining period of the ceasefire.

On the other hand, US President Donald Trump stated categorically that the blockade will continue until a final peace agreement is reached, adding that the waterway is currently "open and ready for business."

A strong point of debate remains President Trump's claim that Iran has "agreed to everything," including the removal of enriched uranium from Iranian territory to the US.

Tehran has officially denied this claim, describing enriched uranium as "sacred" and rejecting the possibility of its transfer.

News of the opening of the strait caused an immediate drop in oil prices of nearly 10% on international stock exchanges. However, analysts warn that uncertainty over a long-term agreement could keep prices under pressure even after the current ceasefire ends.

Although Trump is projecting this situation as a "diplomatic victory", the differences between the two sides remain deep and the situation on the ground, according to MarineTraffic data, shows a cautious movement of tankers./ CNA
