Migration policies tightened/New condition for obtaining Finnish citizenship

The Finnish government announced plans to introduce a knowledge test about Finnish society for citizenship, in another step towards tightening the country's migration policy.

The test, which will be given in one of the country's two main official languages, Finnish or Swedish, aims to assess candidates' knowledge of the functioning of Finnish society and its fundamental principles, as announced by the Finnish Ministry of the Interior. 

Alternatively, candidates can prove their knowledge of society and politics by passing university entrance exams or obtaining a university degree in Finnish or Swedish.

"Citizenship is not granted automatically. These reforms encourage integration, employment and respect for the rules of Finnish society," said Interior Minister Mari Randanen.

Since taking office in 2023, the Nordic country's right-wing coalition government has taken steps to tighten immigration laws.

If the government's plan is approved by parliament, the test will be implemented next year. It will include questions on key Finnish laws, fundamental human rights and gender equality./ CNA
