Famous Dubai hotel to close for 18 months 

Dubai's luxury hotel, the Burj al Arab, will undergo a major 18-month renovation, a staff member told Reuters.

This will be the first time the sail-shaped hotel, one of Dubai's most recognizable landmarks, has closed since its opening in 1999. The renovation also comes at a time when tourism has slowed during the US-Israeli war with Iran.

State-owned Jumeirah, which owns the hotel, said the work would be carried out in phases and led by Paris-based interior architect Tristan Auer.

But the company did not specify whether the hotel would be closed during the renovation. The staff member said the hotel is offering alternative accommodations with reservations during that time. 

Despite some damage when debris from a captured Iranian drone hit its facade in early March, the renovation is not related to that event.

The conflict has hurt the United Arab Emirates, with flight disruptions affecting visitor demand in the country. /CNA
