Closing the Strait of Hormuz/ Great Britain could face food shortages

The UK could face some food shortages by the summer under a worst-case scenario of conflict in the Middle East drawn up by government officials.

Staples such as chicken and pork could be in short supply due to fears that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz could reduce domestic supplies of carbon dioxide, which is used in the slaughter of some animals and in food preservation.

A senior government source told the BBC that planning is underway for a worst-case scenario. This would include closing the Strait of Hormuz during the summer and cutting off domestic carbon dioxide supplies.

The source stressed that the planning was for a worst-case scenario and not a prediction of what would happen. The planning did not suggest that there would be a shortage of critical food supplies. /CNA
