European Parliament proposes 10% increase in EU long-term budget

EU lawmakers in Parliament's Budget Committee approved their negotiating position on the 2028-2034 multiannual budget on Wednesday. They propose a 10% increase compared to the European Commission's €2 trillion proposal.

MEPs say this is the minimum amount of money the EU needs to deliver on its commitments, respond to citizens' demands and tackle key challenges, including large-scale war in Europe, economic and social challenges, a competitiveness gap and the worsening climate and biodiversity crises.

They emphasize that the future long-term EU budget must remain an investment budget that supports EU policies, citizens, regions, businesses and SMEs, while ensuring EU added value compared to national spending. /CNA
