Spain approves decree on the status of irregular migrants

"Reuters" - The Spanish government has approved a new decree aimed at regulating the legal status of hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants, a decision that has been hailed by pro-immigration organizations as a victory for Spanish society.

According to the non-governmental organization Regularización Ya, the measure will protect the most vulnerable immigrants from the rise of anti-immigrant sentiment and hate speech.

Spain plans to grant legal status to around half a million people living in the country illegally. Since the announcement by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's government, migrant support organizations have also launched information sessions to help applicants.

Under the plan, the residence permit would be valid for one year (or five years for children) and could be renewed. After 10 years of residence, immigrants could apply for Spanish citizenship, while for citizens of Latin American countries or refugees, this process could be even faster./ CNA
