Merz welcomes Zelensky in Berlin/ Germany reaffirms aid to Ukraine

"Reuters" - Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his cabinet have paid an official visit to Germany where they were received by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

After a military welcome for President Zelenskyy by the Bundeswehr honor guard in the Chancellery courtyard, the two leaders moved inside for a brief inspection of a building housing several drone models manufactured by German and Ukrainian companies.

The talks mark the first full-scale consultations between the German and Ukrainian governments in two decades. Chancellor Friedrich Merz is keen to underline that Ukraine, which has been under full occupation since 2022, remains Germany's top foreign policy priority.

Germany has become Ukraine's biggest backer since the United States under the Trump administration withdrew its support last year. As a next step, Berlin is trying to unlock a €90 billion EU credit line, which could happen as early as mid-May, once the new EU-friendly Hungarian government drops its resistance to further payments.

Ukraine has made rapid advances in drone technology during its four-year war with Russia. The Bundeswehr, Germany's armed forces, plans to significantly expand its drone capabilities in the coming years.

According to the plans, German companies could produce Ukrainian-designed drones under license and deliver them to Ukraine, while Ukrainian experts would contribute their operational experience.

A joint drone production facility by German defense firm Rheinmetall is already being set up in Ukraine.

Zelenskyy and Merz are expected to sign the relevant memorandums of understanding later./ CNA
