Xi Jinping welcomes Lavrov in Beijing, Russia signals increased energy

Reuters-Chinese President Xi Jinping held a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is on a two-day visit to China, at a time when relations between the two countries continue to deepen.

During the visit, Lavrov announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to pay an official visit to China within the first half of the year. A summit between the two leaders is expected to further confirm the strategic partnership and economic cooperation, especially in the field of energy.

The talks also focused on the Power of Siberia 2 energy project, a planned pipeline that aims to increase Russian gas supplies to China. According to Lavrov, Russia is ready to compensate for the energy shortages of China and other international partners, at a time when energy relations with Europe are in decline.

President Xi stressed the importance of mutual trust and mutual support between the two countries, underlining that Beijing and Moscow should deepen cooperation and safeguard common interests in the international arena.

Meanwhile, Lavrov also touched on global developments, stating that Russia will continue to supply oil to Cuba and is ready to help countries affected by energy crises. He also stressed that Moscow will support any decision by Iran regarding its nuclear program, as long as international norms are respected.
